A 63-year-old Lahaina man died after he was assaulted early Wednesday at the Sands of Kahana resort, and police later arrested a 20-year-old Lahaina man on suspicion of second-degree murder.

According to the Maui Police Department, officers responded at about 5:31 a.m. to a report of an unresponsive man at the Sands of Kahana resort at 4299 Lower Honoapi'ilani Road. Medics determined the 63-year-old man had died at the scene.

Police did not release his identity Wednesday to allow family members time to notify relatives and friends.

Police said surveillance footage showed a nude man approaching the 63-year-old's office at about 1:45 a.m. and assaulting him before fleeing on foot.

Earlier that morning, at about 3:02 a.m., police received a report of a nude man wandering through a Kahana neighborhood.

Officers located the 20-year-old at about 3:35 a.m. with numerous abrasions and took him to Maui Memorial Medical Center for evaluation.

Investigators later determined the man found in Kahana was the same person seen in the surveillance footage, police said.

After his medical evaluation, the 20-year-old man was taken to the Wailuku Police Station, where he was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder.

The investigation is ongoing.
