Maui farmers, ranchers, agricultural leaders, forest landowners and conservation organizations are invited to help identify local natural resource concerns and conservation priorities during a meeting Aug. 26 at the University of Hawaii Maui College.
The local working group meeting will be hosted by the Maui Soil & Water Conservation Districts and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service. It will is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Cooperative Extension Services Building, 310 W. Kaahumanu Ave., No. 214, Kahului.
Participants will discuss Maui's natural resource conditions, identify conservation challenges and prioritize issues that could help guide local conservation programs and funding decisions.
Local working groups advise the Natural Resources Conservation Service on conservation needs and help ensure programs are tailored to the unique conditions of communities and islands.
The meeting will include introductions, a review of natural resource concerns and recent Farm Bill data, followed by breakout sessions to identify and prioritize issues. Participants also will discuss next steps and provide suggestions for future meetings.
The public is encouraged to participate, particularly those involved in agriculture, ranching, forestry, conservation and environmental work.
The meeting is an opportunity for community members to share local knowledge and help shape conservation efforts throughout Maui County.
