The state Department of Health is alerting the public to several events across Maui County in recognition of September as Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month.
On Maui, a SafeTALK Suicide Prevention Training will be from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sept. 10 at the University of Hawaii Maui College. For information, email Wendy.Schwartz@va.gov.
There will also be a sign-waving event by Maui Prevention Suicide Task Force, MEO Youth and YouthLine Hawaii from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 10 in front of Queen Ka'ahumanu Center. For information, email bergan001@hawaii.rr.com.
The Maui Police Department will hold Crisis Intervention Team training from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 30.
On Molokai, Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training will be offered from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 17-18 at the Child & Family Service office. For more information, email mbell@cfs-hawaii.org.
The Molokai Suicide Awareness and Prevention Out of the Darkness Walk will begin at 4 p.m. Sept. 19 at Molokai Community Health Center. For information, call 808-757-0460.
On Lanai, suicide-prevention sign-waving will be from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sept. 16 near the flagpole outside the Dole Building. People are encouraged to bring their own signs.

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, an estimated 13.9 million U.S. adults aged 18 or older had serious thoughts of suicide in 2025. In Hawaii, suicide is the 10th-leading cause of death overall.
