The Maui County Department of Agriculture will accept applications beginning Sept. 23 for its fiscal 2027 Niu, Kalo and 'Ulu Grant program.
The two-year grant provides eligible projects with up to $50,000 per year to cultivate and expand production of niu, or coconut; kalo, or taro; and 'ulu, or breadfruit, across Maui, Molokai and Lanai.
Funding may support cultivation, community food distribution, culturally significant farming practices, keiki food education, preservation of heritage varieties and propagation of niu varieties in areas affected by the coconut rhinoceros beetle.
Applications are due by 4:30 p.m. Oct. 23.
A free online workshop for prospective applicants will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Sept. 24. The workshop will cover eligibility, grant requirements and the application process. Registration is available at bit.ly/NiuKaloUlu.
