County seeks feedback on proposed Paia gym

The Maui County Parks and Recreation Department is seeking feedback on plans to replace the existing Paia Gymnasium with a larger recreational and emergency-response facility.
Comments will be accepted through Oct. 18 at mauicounty.gov/parksplanning.
More than 40 people attended a Sept. 17 meeting at the Paia Community Center to discuss the proposed Alfred "Flako" Boteilho Sr. Gymnasium and offer ideas on its design and site layout, according to the county.
Plans call for demolishing the existing gym and constructing an approximately 15,210-square-foot modern recreational complex that could be used as an emergency shelter or recovery center during and after disasters.
The current concept includes retractable bleachers, a multiuse gym floor, boxing ring, weight-training room, stage, updated locker rooms and restrooms, fire sprinkler system and backup generator.

The county plans to use capital improvement project funding. A cost estimate will be developed after a preferred design and site layout are selected.
Proposed features may change as planning, public consultation, design work and the approval process continue. Ideas on the layout of the site plan and design of the new gymnasium are welcomed.
"We encourage all Maui residents and stakeholders to submit any suggestions or insights about the new gymnasium," Parks and Recreation Department Director Patrick McCall said. "This project is a significant investment in the heart of Pāʻia, providing the community with an improved and expanded gym that can better meet the everyday recreational needs of our keiki, families and residents. Just as importantly, the upgraded facility will strengthen Pāʻia's emergency preparedness and ability to serve as a safe, reliable gathering place and shelter during severe storms and other emergencies."
The project team includes the Parks and Recreation Department, consulting partners G70 International, Bowers + Kubota Consulting, Nishikawa Architects and Fukumoto Engineering.
