Evacuation orders lifted for Olowalu Village with fire 95% contained
Charging stations available at Lahaina Civic Center for West Maui residents without power

Mandatory evacuation orders were lifted for Olowalu Village at 5:45 a.m. Monday, Sept. 28, 2026, after a nearby brush fire forced residents from their homes.
The fire burned more than 100 acres and was 95% contained as of Monday morning, according to the Maui Emergency Management Agency.
Residents in the area from Luawai Street to Ehehene Street in Olowalu Village may return home. They are being advised to use caution in the area, as hazards, including smoke, may still be present.
Fire crews remain on scene and continue working in the area.
An evacuation order for the area was issued at 2:39 p.m. Saturday after the brush fire was reported at 1:57 p.m.
Honoapiilani Highway was closed from North Kihei Road to Olowalu General Store until 9 p.m. Saturday, when the makai lane of the highway was opened for contraflow traffic. Both lanes of the highway reopened at 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
A high surf advisory remains in effect for Maui County, according to the National Weather Service.
Residents should continue to call 911 for emergencies. For West Maui residents, if cellular service is unavailable and they are unable to reach 911, they should go to the Lahaina Police Station at 1850 Honoapiilanai Highway to access emergency assistance and resources.
Residents are encouraged to check on family members, neighbors, kūpuna and others who may need assistance during an extended power or communications outage.
Charging stations and Starlink satellite internet connectivity are available at Lahaina Civic Center Gym, 1840 Honoapiilani Highway. Residents should bring their own charging cables and adapters.
Cellular service may remain intermittent while power outages continue. Residents are encouraged to conserve their cellphone batteries, keep devices charged when possible and use text messaging when cellular networks are congested.
A charging station at Mayor Hannibal Tavares Community Center meeting room in Pukalani closed at 10 p.m. Sunday after power was restored Upcountry.
Residents without connectivity are encouraged to use a battery-powered or hand-crank radio to monitor local radio stations for emergency information and county updates. Residents can monitor KPOA at FM 92.9 and FM 93.5; KJKS at FM 99.3 and FM 99.9; KJMD at FM 107.1 and FM 98.3; KLHI at FM 101.7 and FM 92.5; KMVI at AM 900 and FM 102.5; and KNUI at AM 550 and FM 106.1.
