Five surfers, including two children, were rescued from rough ocean conditions off Papalaua State Wayside Park on Aug. 31, according to the Maui County Department of Fire and Public Safety.
Firefighters, Ocean Safety officers and U.S. Coast Guard personnel responded at 1:53 p.m. to a report of several people on surfboards struggling in gusty winds. Firefighters spotted the surfers about 300 yards offshore and directed a jet ski crew and Coast Guard vessel to their location.
The jet ski crew brought four members of the original group to shore, along with another surfer who was also struggling in the windy conditions.
The rescued surfers included a 52-year-old woman, an 11-year-old girl and a 9-year-old boy who were visiting Maui, as well as a 28-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman who are residents.
No injuries were reported. The fire department said winds were gusting from 20 to 25 mph and ocean conditions were choppy. The incident concluded at 2:43 p.m.
