Four Lahaina public schools will remain closed Monday, Sept. 28, because of widespread power outages, the nearby Olowalu brush fire and concerns about reliable water service, the state Department of Education announced Sunday.
King Kamehameha III Elementary School, Princess Nāhiʻenaʻena Elementary School, Lahaina Intermediate School and Lahainaluna High School will remain closed.
Most other Maui County public schools will reopen Monday.
The department said power has been restored to most affected areas in Maui County, allowing the majority of schools to resume normal operations. However, outages remain in Lahaina, and weather conditions have affected utility inspections and restoration work.
With the Olowalu brush fire still active and the duration of the outages uncertain, the department said it cannot ensure reliable water service at the four Lahaina campuses.
The department will continue monitoring conditions to determine when the schools can safely reopen.
