HI-5 redemption rates to change Oct. 1

The Hawaii Department of Health will update the rates certified redemption centers use to calculate HI-5 recycling refunds by weight beginning Oct. 1.
The rates convert the weight of plastic, glass, aluminum and bi-metal beverage containers into an estimated number of containers. The biggest change replaces two plastic rates with one based on the average weight of mixed-size plastic containers.
The new rates follow a study in which Cascadia Consulting Group counted and weighed a sample of more than 145,000 HI-5 containers at redemption centers statewide. All certified centers must use the revised rates beginning Oct. 1.
Consumers may instead ask a redemption center to count their containers. Centers are required to count loads of up to 200 containers upon request; counting larger loads is at the operator's discretion. The revised rates are available at tinyurl.com/bdax332u.
