The emergency shelter at Lahaina Civic Center Gym closed Monday afternoon after power was restored to nearly all West Maui customers, and four Lahaina public schools that were closed Monday are scheduled to reopen Tuesday.
The shelter, which opened Saturday after an evacuation order was issued for Olowalu Village because of a fast-moving brush fire, closed at 4 p.m. Monday. Charging stations and Starlink satellite internet service also had been available at the site during the power outages.
Mandatory evacuation orders for Olowalu Village were lifted at 5:45 a.m. Monday after the fire, which burned more than 100 acres, reached 95% containment. Fire crews remained on scene, and residents were advised to use caution because smoke and other hazards could remain.
Hawaiian Electric reported Monday afternoon that service had been restored to nearly all 10,000 affected West Maui customers after crews completed inspections and repairs to the transmission line serving the area.
Meanwhile, King Kamehameha III Elementary School, Princess Nahienaena Elementary School, Lahaina Intermediate School and Lahainaluna High School will reopen to students and staff Tuesday, the state Department of Education announced.
The four schools remained closed Monday because of widespread power outages, the nearby Olowalu brush fire and concerns about maintaining reliable water service.
The department said improved conditions, restoration of power to much of West Maui and campus assessments allowed the schools to resume operations.
With the four Lahaina campuses reopening, all Maui County and Hawaii island public schools affected by Hurricane Nolo will have resumed normal operations.
