Lahainaluna High School has become the first school in Hawaii to receive an America's Healthiest Schools award, recognizing its efforts to promote the health and well-being of students and staff.
The national nonprofit Alliance for a Healthier Generation recognized Lahainaluna for its practices in staff well-being, school health services and health education.
The school's approach to staff well-being includes cultural practices intended to foster connection. During a staff meeting, teachers selected a kukui nut, a Hawaiian symbol of knowledge, paired with an ʻŌlelo Noʻeau, or Hawaiian proverb. Teachers reflected on the proverb's meaning to them as educators and shared their perspectives with colleagues.
Lahainaluna is among 1,376 schools in 35 states and Washington, D.C., included in the organization's 2026 cohort. The award recognizes schools that make health and well-being part of their culture and practices.
The Alliance for a Healthier Generation has partnered with more than 57,000 school communities since 2005, reaching more than 31.3 million young people, according to the organization.
