Maui donation drive Sept. 26-27 to benefit Kauai hurricane recovery

A donation drive to help residents on Kauai affected by Hurricane Lowell will be Sept. 26-27 in Kahului.
According to Maui County officials, the Kokua Kauai Donation Drive will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days in the Queen Ka'ahumanu Center parking lot near the former Sears location at 275 W. Kaahumanu Ave.
The drive follows a similar effort to collect donations for Hawaii Island residents affected by Hurricane Lala.
"Disasters can come at any time, and when our neighbors need help, we show up for one another," Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen said. "Kauai stood with Maui in our time of need, and now it is our turn to stand with Kauai. The timing of these recent disasters does not lessen our responsibility to care for one another. This is another opportunity for our Maui community to come together, share what we can and send our aloha across the ocean channel to our neighbors on Kauai."
Requested donations include bottled water, rice, canned meats and meals, canned fruits and vegetables, instant noodles, peanut butter, crackers, packaged snacks, cereal, oatmeal, meal-replacement drinks and shelf-stable milk.
Other requested items include baby food and formula; diapers and wipes; pet food, bedding and supplies; toiletries and personal hygiene products; tarps; chainsaw chains in all sizes; batteries; solar-powered or battery-powered lights; and cell phone charging cords and power banks.
Only new items will be accepted. Perishable foods and clothing cannot be accepted.
Donations will be distributed to affected Kauai communities by Hawaii Foodbank Kauai. The items will be shipped by container with support from the International Longshore and Warehouse Union.
