Maui drive collects thousands of items for Hawaii Island

A two-day donation drive on Maui collected more than 5,500 items and 5,000 pounds of nonperishable food for Hawaii Island communities affected by Hurricane Lala.
More than 200 vehicles passed through the Kōkua Hawaiʻi Island Donation Drive on Sept. 5-6 at Queen Ka'ahumanu Center, according to the county.
More than 75 volunteers, including International Longshore and Warehouse Union members, county employees and community members, helped collect, sort and load the donations.
The drive also collected 273 cases of water and 950 pounds of pet food. Other donations included baby supplies, batteries, flashlights, gas cans, towels, hygiene products and cleaning supplies.
The supplies will be shipped in a 40-foot container, with the union covering the transportation costs.
"We are incredibly grateful to the people of Maui who showed up in such a big way to support our neighbors on Hawaii Island," Mayor Richard Bissen said. "The generosity we saw over these two days is a powerful reminder of how our community comes together when our neighbors need help."
Maui County also plans to organize assistance for Kauai communities affected by Hurricane Lowell. Details will be announced later.
