The Maui County Planning Department will hold public meetings Sept. 23 and Sept. 24 as it assesses the Special Management Area boundary for the island of Maui.
The project will develop recommendations for a scientifically and culturally based inland SMA boundary that responds to projected environmental and climate changes while balancing environmental protection with permitting and review requirements.
The first meeting will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Lahaina Intermediate School cafeteria, 871 Lahainaluna Road. A Central Maui meeting will follow from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Kahului Community Center, 275 Uhu St.
Light refreshments will be provided.
The existing SMA boundaries were established statewide in the 1970s and have not been reassessed for Maui. The project will not propose changes to SMA rules and does not include Molokai or Lanai.
Additional meetings are planned Oct. 7 in Hana, Oct. 14 in Paia and Oct. 21 in Kihei. Times and locations will be announced later.
