King Kekaulike returned to action Sept. 5 at home and defeated Maui High 36-12 in a Maui Interscholastic League football game.
The victory improved Kekaulike's record to 2-1 in MIL contests, while Maui High fell to 1-2.
Kekaulike opened the scoring when quarterback Slade Kamaunu took the snap from the 18-yard line, stepped up in the pocket under pressure and found Makahinu Au streaking toward the end zone for a touchdown. Easton Decoite's extra point gave Na Alii a 7-0 lead with 3:36 remaining in the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, Maui High went for it on fourth down from the Na Alii 32 yard line. Kekaulike defender Syrus Vafaie broke up the pass, leading to a turnover on downs.
On the next play, Kekaulike running back Wayne Kahula broke a 68-yard touchdown run, and another Decoite PAT made it 14-0 at 11:39 in the second quarter.
Also in the second quarter, Kekaulike forced a Maui High fumble that the Sabers recovered in their own end zone, resulting in a safety and giving Na Alii a 16-0 lead.
Maui High got on the scoreboard at 4:22 in the second quarter with quarterback Colin Rowe connecting with Reno Vaka on an 18-yard pass. The two-point conversion failed, leaving Kekaulike up 16-6.
Kekaulike scored again with Kamaunu on a 4-yard run. The kick failed, leaving Na Alii with a 22-6 lead.
Kamaunu recorded another rushing touchdown, this time from 3 yards out at 10:22 in the fourth quarter. The kick was good, and Kekaulike grew its lead to 29-6.
Kamakoamaikalani Kaiwi scored for Kekaulike on a two-yard run at 4:27 in the fourth quarter. Decoite kicked the PAT to make it 36-6.
Maui High scored again with a 21-yard pass from Vaka to Devin Myrick with 52 seconds left in the fourth quarter. The failed kick left the final score at 36-12.
According to ScoringLive.com, Kahula carried the ball 22 times for 195 yards and one touchdown for Na Alii. Also, Kamaunu was 2-for-7 for 35 yards and one interception. He also carried the ball 10 times for 80 yards, including two touchdowns. Kanoa Kuailani carried the ball 10 times for 39 yards.
Maui High quarterback Colin Rowe was 13-for-23 for 148 yards and a TD. Sabers receiver Devin Myrick caught five passes for 71 yards.
Vaka had five receptions for 66 yards as well as going 4-for-4 passing for 56 yards and one TD.
Kekaulike will face Lahainaluna (1-2) Sept. 11. Maui High is scheduled to play at Kamehameha Maui (2-1) Sept. 12.
