New exhibits in Hawaiian and English open at Haleakala Visitor Center

Haleakala National Park has opened new exhibits in Hawaiian and English at the Haleakala Visitor Center in the park's summit district.
The exhibits share stories of the mountain, its cultural significance and its natural features. Displays pictured at the center cover traditional Hawaiian toolmaking, the story of Maui snaring the sun and ways to experience the summit.
The visitor center is a popular stop that sits at an elevation of 9,740 feet on the way up to the summit.

"The exhibits in ʻŌlelo Hawai'i and English share the story of Haleakalā and are a first for National Park sites in the region," park Superintendent Natalie Gates said in a news release. "We could not have done this without our park partners, Haleakalā Conservancy and Hawai'i Pacific Parks Association," she added.
The National Park Service worked with kupuna and experts in the Hawaiian language, exhibit design, anthropology and cultural relevance to develop the displays. An oli of gratitude and celebration was performed before the visitor center opened to the public.
