One injured, two displaced in Haiku house fire

A 45-year-old man suffered burn injuries and two people were displaced by a fire Friday night at a home in the 1300 block of Kaupakalua Road in Haiku, according to the Maui Fire Department.

The fire was reported at 10:36 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find a bedroom burning inside the single-story, single-family residence.

Crews deployed hoses, entered the home and extinguished the flames after confirming that all occupants had evacuated. The fire was confined to the bedroom where it began.

The man with burns was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment.

The fire was brought under control at 11:02 p.m. and extinguished at 12:07 a.m. Saturday.

The fire was accidental, according to the department.

Responding units included engines from Makawao, Kula and Kahului, along with Rescue 10, Hazmat 10, a battalion chief and a fire investigator.
