A 61-year-old woman from Wailuku suffered fatal injuries when she was hit by a vehicle while crossing Kaahumanu Avenue on foot Wednesday night in Kahului.
According to Maui police, the woman was crossing the street outside of a marked crosswalk when she was struck by a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox being driven by a 70-year-old man, also from Wailuku.
Police said the collision happened as the man was headed east approaching the intersection with South Wakea Avenue. He was reportedly driving in the inner eastbound lane while the woman was walking north across Kaahumanu Avenue.
Police said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her name is being withheld to allow her family to notify their extended family and friends.
Police said the man who was driving the Equinox was not injured. He was wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.
The investigation is ongoing.
The woman's death is the eighth traffic-related fatality in Maui County this year, compared to 12 at the same time last year.
