The Maui County Planning Department will host a series of public meetings this month in East Maui, on the North Shore and in South Maui regarding a new Special Management Area boundary for the island of Maui.
The Planning Department is assessing the existing SMA boundary for the island of Maui. The SMA was established in the 1970s, and work is underway to develop recommendations for a scientific and culturally based inland SMA boundary.
The goal is to create a boundary that is responsive to projected changes in environmental and climate conditions, and that balances the need for environmental protection with the burden of excessive review or permitting requirements on both local residents and the County Planning Department.
The project will not provide amendments to the SMA rules for the islands of Molokai and Lanai.
A series of five meetings have been scheduled across the island of Maui to encourage participation from all community members. Meetings in West Maui and Central Maui were held in September. The following three will be held in October:
• East Maui -- 6-8 p.m. Oct. 7 at Hana High School Cafeteria, 4111 Hana Highway.
• North Shore Maui --5-7 p.m. Oct. 14 at Paia Community Center, 252 Hana Highway.
• South Maui --5-7 p.m. Oct. 21 at Kulanihako֥i High School Cafeteria, Kulanihakoi Street and Piilani Highway, Kihei.
