An 18-year-old man from Lahaina died in a single-vehicle wreck Sept. 23 on Honoapiilani Highway in Lahaina.
Police identified the man as Manuel Olivas on Tuesday.
The wreck happened at about 1:33 a.m. near the highway's intersection with Kaanapali Parkway.
Police said Olivas was driving a white 2000 Chevrolet Silverado south on Honoapiilani Highway in the inner lane at high speed when he lost control of the vehicle.
The Silverado then went off the road, down an embankment and hit a tree on the driver's side of the vehicle.
Olivas was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing, but police said speed is considered a factor in the collision.
Olivas' death was the ninth traffic-related fatality in Maui County this year. At the same time last year, there had been 12.
