Public invited to attend War Memorial Gymnasium blessing Friday, Sept. 25

A blessing ceremony for the renovation of War Memorial Gymnasium in Wailuku will begin at noon Friday, Sept. 25.
The gymnasium, built in 1962 for $700,000, has undergone a three-year, $32.5 million renovation by Blazy Construction, according to Maui County. The public is invited to attend the ceremony.
The ceremony will be held before the project is fully completed. Afterward, the gymnasium will enter a soft-opening period while finishing work continues.
Renovations include enclosing the lobby and front restroom area; reconstructing offices, locker rooms and restrooms to meet Americans with Disabilities Act requirements; installing air conditioning and a fire sprinkler system; and refurbishing the gym's interior with new flooring and ceilings. Enclosed windows replaced the building's original open-air design.
The project also includes structural and design improvements needed to meet Enhanced Hurricane Protection Area shelter standards. The work includes reinforcing the existing roof, walls and foundation; installing a permanent emergency generator and cooling towers; and preparing the building for the future installation of a solar energy system.
As part of the hurricane shelter improvements, structural anchors were installed at 12 portable buildings at neighboring H.P. Baldwin High School.
