The public is invited to attend a community outreach event and observe a Maui Fire Department wildfire training exercise Oct. 7 in Paia.
The outreach session will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the park adjacent to the old Paia Gym, 640 Baldwin Ave. An operational readiness exercise will follow in a nearby neighborhood. Additional details about the exercise will be provided during the outreach event, according to the department.
The exercise is part of "Responding to the Interface," an IAFF training course being conducted Oct. 6-9 by the Maui Fire Department and Wildfire Conservancy. The course focuses on firefighting in the wildland-urban interface, where wildfires threaten developed areas and structures.
Participating organizations include the Maui Fire Department, Maui Emergency Management Agency, Hawaii Wildfire Management Organization, Wildfire Conservancy and Maui County Department of Environmental Management.

The training program was offered twice last year, with operational readiness exercises conducted in Kula and Wailea.
