Maui Health and the state are determining how to repair and reopen portions of Kula Hospital damaged by Kona low storms in March, while displaced patient services continue at other locations.

"We are working closely with the state and others to figure out what needs to be done to move forward," said Mahie Wong, a spokesperson for Maui Health, the state-designated operator of Kula Hospital.

"We hope to have more information soon," Wong said.

No timetable has been announced for completing the work or reopening the affected facilities.

The closure displaced 109 patients and residents, including nine people with intellectual disabilities who had been living at Hale Makamae.

Some Hale Makamae residents who were transferred to Oahu will return to Maui this month, according to the state. They will be housed temporarily at a location on the Maui Memorial Medical Center campus.

Other long-term care residents are being housed at a facility in Kihei and at Maui Memorial, the state said.

The March storms caused extensive water intrusion and infrastructure damage to Kula Hospital's long-term care facility and emergency department.

A state assessment found that closure of the emergency department has led to a modest increase in patient transports but has not affected emergency medical services' ability to respond promptly to 911 calls.

"The data demonstrates that EMS operations have remained resilient and consistent, even amidst increased demands, ensuring uninterrupted service to the community," the state said.

Damage assessments of the historic hospital have been completed, and remediation work remains underway, according to the state.

Kula Clinic, which was not damaged by the storms, continues to provide outpatient services from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
