Maui County officials reported at 12:30 p.m. Saturday that Hurricane Nolo is forecast to continue tracking south of the Hawaiian Islands, reducing the potential for significant impacts the county.
Maui County remained under a tropical storm watch, flood watch and high surf advisory. Nolo is forecast to continue westward through the weekend.
While the storm's current track is encouraging for Maui County, local officials said they are monitoring the storm, as impacts can extend well beyond its center. Strong winds remain a concern, with tropical storm-force winds expected as Nolo passes south of the state. Heavy rain, flooding and hazardous surf also remain possible.
East Maui continues to have the greatest potential for rainfall impacts, according to the National Weather Service.
Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items and avoid outdoor burning while strong winds persist.
The Hawaii Department of Transportation is also asking residents and visitors to avoid nonessential travel on Hana Highway, where fallen trees, rocks and flooding can make travel hazardous.
Emergency shelters remain on standby. County and American Red Cross personnel and supplies have been positioned so shelters can open if weather conditions warrant.
Maui Bus fixed-route, ADA paratransit and commuter services to West and South Maui were suspended Saturday. Commuter service to West and South Maui will remain suspended Sunday. Fixed-route and ADA paratransit service may resume later Sunday if conditions allow, the county said.
The Mayor's Kokua Kauai Donation Drive, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, will be rescheduled.
Mayor Richard Bissen signed an emergency proclamation Thursday to help the county deploy personnel and resources and access assistance if the storm causes damage. The Maui Emergency Management Agency continues to coordinate with county departments and state and community partners.
The county urged residents to follow updated forecasts and alerts at weather.gov/hfo and mauicounty.gov/MEMA.
