State expects Kaumalapau Harbor to be ready for operations Sunday

The Hawaii Department of Transportation expects Kaumalapau Harbor on Lanai to be ready to resume operations on Sunday.
The harbor has been out of service following damage from Hurricane Lowell.
Normal interisland barge service by Young Bros. is expected to resume Wednesday.
The department said that cleaning of the waterway began with side-scan sonar on Thursday to identify underwater hazards.

The department said on the land side, crews began filling a sinkhole with a combination of geotextile fabrics, Kyowa bags, grout and boulders.
Work on Friday includes the removal of containers and debris via cranes directed by divers.
The department said repairs on land will continue after the harbor has been reopened, and sinkhole repairs and resurfacing of the pier apron are expected to take seven days.
The department said it is in communications with Young Brothers and the next barge shipment is expected to follow the normal sailing schedule of arriving Wednesday in port and departing Thursday.
