The Maui Police Department's Crisis Intervention Team honored 22 people who completed the department's training course focused on interacting with individuals who may be experiencing a mental health or emotional crisis.

The department said the training focuses on de-escalating situations before they lead to violence or self-harm while helping ensure individuals receive the appropriate response and care they need.

The latest CIT class included officers and civilians from MPD, Aegaeon Security, Fairmont Kea Lani, Four Seasons Resort Maui, Grand Wailea Maui, Maui Community Correctional Center, Maui County Department of Transportation, Malama Family Recovery, Maui Community Mental Health Center and Wailuku Federal Credit Union.

The class was the 21st to complete the training since the program began in 2013. A total of 346 people have completed the 40-hour course, including personnel from state and county organizations, nonprofit groups, healthcare providers and resorts.

CIT training is part of MPD's Critical Outreach and Response through Education, or CORE, unit, which works with community agencies on issues involving homeless people and individuals who may be experiencing mental health crises.
