The Maui Fire Department received the call for a fire on the mauka side of Piilani Highway near Kaonoulu Street at 3:52 p.m. The fire prompted a closure of the highway from Kulanihakoi Street to Ohukai Road before firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control.

Firefighters arrived on scene to find brush burning along the highway and spreading into an adjacent pasture. Crews attacked the fire from the highway while wildland firefighting vehicles accessed the flames through the pasture.
