Hale Kau Kau provided 6,525 meals to Maui residents in September, the most the organization has distributed in a single month during its 35-year history, according to Barry Rosenfeld, president of the Hale Kau Kau Advisory Board.
Each night, Hale Kau Kau delivered 103 meals to homebound kupuna and people with disabilities, while 81 residents received meal plates at the organization’s South Maui meal window.
Hale Kau Kau also provided 200 meals during the month to the Lahaina Rescue and Recovery Center and Maui Rescue Mission as needed.
The organization began a new outreach program in September, with the Hale Kau Kau van distributing afternoon meals Monday through Friday at Keolahou Church, Kalama Park and Kam III.
Hale Kau Kau relies on volunteers and fundraising to provide its meal services. Its annual Stomp Out Hunger fundraiser will begin at 8 a.m. Oct. 31 and will include a 5K run and 1-mile walk. Breakfast and door prizes will be offered, and participants are invited to wear Halloween costumes.
