The Maui Filipino Chamber of Commerce and Maui County will hold the annual Filipino American History Month Flag-Raising Ceremony from 10 to 11 a.m. Oct. 1 on the front lawn of the Kalana O Maui Building, 200 S. High St.
This year's ceremony marks the 120th anniversary of the arrival of the first 15 Sakadas, Filipino laborers who came to Hawaii in 1906. The observance will honor generations of Filipino immigrants whose work and contributions helped shape Hawaii and Maui's communities.
Maui County held its first Philippine flag-raising ceremony for Filipino American History Month on Oct. 1, 2011. The event has continued annually, with the Philippine flag displayed at the county building throughout October.
The program will include the raising of the Philippine flag, a county proclamation, community remarks and cultural presentations. Filipino food, art, culture and fellowship will follow the ceremony.
The event is free and open to the public.
Community partners include the Maui Filipino Community Council, Bahay Kubo Heritage Foundation and Kaibigan ng Lāhaina Foundation.
