Maui to preview 120th anniversary celebration of Filipinos in Hawaii

1 min read

A preview of the 120th anniversary celebration of Filipinos in Hawaii will take place Oct. 25 on Maui, ahead of a statewide commemoration Dec. 20.

The December event, themed "Sakada Sacrifices ... Our Future," is presented by the Bahay Kubo Heritage Foundation and Binhi at Ani.

Sunday’s preview will include the unveiling of an original painting by Maui artist Philip Sabado, commissioned by Tante and Tilie Urban for use in the statewide anniversary celebration. Sabado and the Urbans are descendants of sakadas, Filipino laborers who came to Hawaii to work on sugar plantations.

Hawaii established Dec. 20 as Sakada Day in 2015 to recognize the historical significance of the arrival of the first Filipino plantation workers and their contributions to the state.

Annalissa Burgos of Hawaii News Now will host the event Oct. 25.
