MEMA issues evacuation warning for Kipahulu District of Haleakala National Park

2 min read

At the request of the National Park Service, the Maui Emergency Management Agency issued an evacuation warning at 10:43 a.m. Thursday for the Kipahulu District of Haleakala National Park due to flash flooding and other hazards.

An evacuation warning means there is a potential threat to life or property. Those who require additional time to evacuate or have livestock or pets may consider leaving early.

A temporary evacuation site opened Wednesday night at Helene Hall, 174 Keawa Place, in Hana, due to increased rainfall and flooding.

The site will remain open until the threat of flash flooding has passed. It provides a safe gathering area but does not have the supplies of a regular shelter. Residents coming to the site should bring essentials. Pets are allowed only if they are in crates or cages.

The Kipahulu District is about 12 miles past Hana in East Maui and is separate from the park’s high-altitude Summit District.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for Maui County through 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29.

Residents are urged to remain alert for changing weather conditions and possible flooding.
