The Maui Police Department has identified the motorcyclist who died in a Friday night collision in Kihei as Jorge Martinez, 37, of Kihei.
Police also corrected an earlier report, saying the 18-year-old Kihei man driving the other vehicle was arrested on suspicion of third-degree negligent homicide, not third-degree negligent injury. He was subsequently released pending further investigation.
The collision occurred at approximately 7:34 p.m. on Piilani Highway near Kaonoulu Street.
According to police, the 18-year-old was driving a 2013 Ford Edge east on Kaonoulu Street and turning left onto northbound Piilani Highway when the SUV collided with a 2013 Harley-Davidson motorcycle traveling south on Piilani Highway.
Martinez was ejected from the motorcycle and transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Police said he was wearing a helmet.
The driver of the Ford was not injured.
The death marks Maui County’s 11th traffic fatality of 2026, compared with 14 at the same time last year.
The investigation is ongoing.
