The Sewing Hui of Maui is accepting applications through Oct. 31 for a new bridal and formalwear alterations training program designed to help five Maui residents start their own businesses.
Funded by the Maui County Office of Economic Development, the program will provide 120 hours of instruction, including 90 hours of specialized sewing training and 30 hours of business education.
Participants will learn bridal fittings, bodice alterations, corsetry, lace and beadwork, hems and other formalwear techniques. Business instruction will cover planning, marketing, pricing, financial management and customer service.
The program will be led by Jennifer Oberg, founder and director of The Sewing Hui of Maui, who previously operated a bridal alterations and custom dressmaking business in Makawao.
Participants who successfully complete the program will receive a $2,000 business startup stipend.
The program is open to Maui residents with basic sewing skills and an interest in starting an alterations business. Classes are expected to begin in December and continue through summer 2027.
Enrollment is limited to five participants. Applications are available at tinyurl.com/yc3ufhxx.
