Employees of Hawaii Vacation Condos by Outrigger have received the No Ka Oi Highway Hui Award from the state Department of Transportation's Highways Maui District for their volunteer cleanup efforts along the Lahaina Bypass.

Since joining the state's Adopt-A-Highway program in 2022, the group has removed 263 bags of trash from a two-mile section of Route 3000. A total of 317 volunteers have participated in the cleanups, helping prevent litter from reaching the ocean and other sensitive ecosystems.

The effort is organized by employees at Outrigger Honua Kai Resort & Spa and includes workers from six Maui properties: Honua Kai, The Kapalua Villas Maui, Palms at Wailea, Napili Shores Maui by Outrigger, Royal Kahana Maui by Outrigger and Kaanapali Maui at the Eldorado by Outrigger. Employees of Outrigger Kaanapali Beach Resort also participate.

Ty Fukuro, program manager of Environmental Management for Highways Maui District, also recognized the employees for their volunteer efforts and the support provided by their resorts.

The Adopt-A-Highway program requires participating groups to maintain an assigned highway section for at least two years and conduct cleanups at least four times annually.

Maui County organizations interested in participating can find information and applications at stormwatermaui.com.
