Schatz-backed law aims to prevent seafood fraud

Sen. Brian Schatz

Bipartisan legislation introduced by U.S. Sens. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, to help identify illegally caught or mislabeled imported fish has been signed into law by President Donald Trump.

The Illegal Red Snapper and Tuna Enforcement Act directs the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to develop a standardized method for determining the geographic origin of red snapper and certain tuna species imported into the United States.

The legislation is intended to help law enforcement identify fish caught in U.S. or foreign waters and detect illegally caught or falsely labeled seafood before it reaches consumers.

"Our new law will give law enforcement a powerful new tool to detect where ahi comes from, help prevent seafood fraud, and give consumers better, more accurate information on what they're buying and eating," Schatz said in a statement.
