Maui County emergency officials opened a temporary evacuation site at Helene Hall in Hana amid increased rainfall and flooding.
The site at 174 Keawa Place opened Wednesday night. The county said it will remain open until the threat of flooding has passed.
The site provides a safe gathering area but does not have the supplies of a regular shelter. Residents coming to the site should bring essentials. Pets are allowed only if they are in crates or cages.
If necessary, temporary evacuation sites can be converted into shelters that provide cots, food and water.
Piilani Highway at mile marker 51 in Hana was closed in both directions due to high water, according to a Maui Police Department roadway alert around 8 p.m. Uakea Road and Keanini Drive in Hana town were also closed due to flooding.
