Three Paia events to focus on coastal restoration, park planning

2 min read

Three community events in November will focus on coastal protection, park planning and dune restoration in the Kapukaulua area of Paia.

The Maui County Department of Parks and Recreation and SSFM International will host a public meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. Nov. 4 at the Paia Community Center and via Zoom to gather input on the H.A. Baldwin Park Adaptation Plan.

The University of Hawaii Sea Grant College Program and Nā Maka Onaona will host their monthly Huli 'ia gathering from 11 a.m. to noon Nov. 9 at Baldwin Beach Park, near the shaded area by the restrooms.

The gathering uses the practice of Kilo ʻĀina, or observing seasonal changes in the natural environment, to document coastal conditions and help guide shoreline management and the Kapukaulua Dune Restoration Project.

A free, family-friendly Dune Restoration Celebration is scheduled for 3 to 6 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Paia Youth and Cultural Center.

The event will feature native dune planting from 3 to 4 p.m., community partner booths, activities and project updates, followed by live music at 4 p.m. by Sunny Kalama and Sticky Rice.

The celebration recognizes more than a decade of coastal restoration and community stewardship involving local organizations and environmental partners.
