Wastewater overflow closes portions of Kalama Park

1 min read

Portions of Kalama Park in Kihei are temporarily closed following a wastewater overflow reported Thursday, Oct. 22, at Kihei Wastewater Pump Station No. 6, according to the Maui County Department of Environmental Management.

The overflow, caused by a mechanical failure in a force main at the pump station, has not reached the ocean but is affecting Kalama Park, the Kihei Fire Station and surrounding properties.

The park’s tennis and basketball courts, soccer field and Little League baseball field are temporarily closed.

While crews assess the situation and make repairs, the county is asking properties connected to the sewer system in South Maui, including Sugar Beach, Kihei, Wailea and Makena, to eliminate or minimize toilet flushing, bathing, laundry and dishwashing to reduce wastewater entering the system.

The county also is asking the public to avoid traveling into the affected area.
