Hawaiian Electric issues power shutoff watch for Maui County

2 min read

Hawaiian Electric has issued a Public Safety Power Shutoff watch for Maui County through Sunday as high winds and dry conditions raise the risk of wildfires.

The utility announced Friday that it is monitoring weather conditions that could prompt precautionary power shutoffs in communities at high risk for wildfires over the next 24 to 48 hours. The watch also includes Hawaii Island.

A PSPS watch does not mean power will be shut off, but customers in affected areas are encouraged to prepare for possible extended outages.

Hawaiian Electric said high winds and other conditions could also cause outages unrelated to the PSPS program. If outages occur at night, power will remain off until crews can inspect lines and equipment and complete any necessary repairs.

The utility is monitoring weather conditions, positioning crews and equipment to speed restoration efforts and coordinating with state and county emergency officials as needed.

Residents are encouraged to check emergency supplies, including flashlights, batteries and battery-powered radios, and prepare backup plans for medical equipment that requires electricity. Portable generators should be operated outdoors in well-ventilated areas.

Customers should also turn refrigerators and freezers to their coldest settings, unplug unnecessary electronics and avoid downed power lines, which should be treated as energized. Anyone encountering a downed line should stay at least 30 feet away and call 911 in an emergency.
