Kula Hospital targets late-summer 2027 reopening

Maui Health has selected Nordic PCL Construction as the general contractor for the restoration of Kula Hospital and is targeting a late-summer 2027 reopening of the historic Upcountry facility.
The hospital, its Emergency Department and the Hale Makamae care facility have been temporarily closed since sustaining damage during back-to-back Kona low storms in March.
The restoration project includes repairs and modernization of resident rooms, activity rooms, nursing stations and essential building systems. Exterior windows and doors will also be replaced with weather-protective units designed to meet historic-preservation requirements and better protect the facility from future severe weather.
"Since the storms, our focus has been on bringing Kula Hospital back to the Upcountry community," said Wade Ebersole, CEO of Maui Health, in a Monday news release.
Nordic PCL Construction has 88 years of experience building in Hawaii.

The restoration project has a preliminary cost estimate of approximately $65 million, with funding from the state and an investment from Kaiser Permanente. The estimate could change as construction details are finalized.
In September, the state, Maui Health and Kaiser Permanente announced plans to restore and reopen the hospital.
Maui Health said the late-summer 2027 reopening target is subject to weather, material availability and other construction factors. Separate updates on reopening timelines for the Emergency Department and Hale Makamae will be provided as work progresses.
Kula Hospital was founded in 1910 as Kula Sanatorium, a tuberculosis treatment center. The facility has served the Upcountry community for more than a century.
Kula Clinic remains open and continues to serve patients. The hospital’s Emergency Department remains closed, and anyone experiencing a medical emergency should call 911 or go to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Department.
