The Maui County Department of Transportation unveiled three new electric bus charging stations during a blessing ceremony Friday at the Kahului Transit Center.
The ceremony began at the War Memorial Stadium parking lot, where guests boarded an electric Maui Bus for a ride to the transit center for the formal blessing.
The new charging facilities are part of the county’s efforts to transition toward cleaner public transportation, reduce vehicle emissions and improve air quality.
The project was funded through a partnership involving federal, state and local entities, including Hawaiian Electric’s "Charge Up" eBus pilot program.
"Central to this achievement is a partnership through Hawaiian Electric's 'Charge Up' eBus pilot program," county Transportation Director Marc Takamori said in a news release. "Hawaiian Electric funded and coordinated the essential electrical service equipment and utility upgrades required to make this heavy-duty charging site possible."

Takamori said the county leveraged federal grant funding and local utility partnerships to support the project.
