County urges hurricane preparedness as season begins

Maui County officials are urging residents and visitors to prepare for hurricane season, which began Sunday and runs through Nov. 30. The National Weather Service is forecasting an above-normal season in the Central Pacific basin, including Hawaii, with a 70% chance of above-normal activity. Forecasters expect between five and 13 tropical cyclones, including tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes. Man running for US House arrested following disturbance at public building

On Friday, Maui police arrested Kirill Basin, who recently announced he is running for Hawaii's 2nd Congressional District seat in the U.S. House. According to police, dispatch received a report that at approximately 9:30 a.m., Basin entered a county building off Main Street in Wailuku while brandishing a firearm and engaged in a verbal altercation with county employees. Energy bill assistance applications open for Maui residents

Maui County residents who need help paying their electric bills can apply for assistance through the Hawaii Home Energy Assistance Program during the month of June. According to Hawaiian Electric, the program provides a one-time credit to eligible lower-income households to help offset energy costs. Applications for the annual energy credit program will be accepted through June 30. On Maui, applications are processed by Maui Economic Opportunity. Marine debris cleanup June 5 at Baldwin Beach

The community is invited to help remove marine debris from 4 to 5:30 p.m. June 5 at Kapukaulua (Baldwin Beach) in Paia in observance of World Environment Day. Hosted by the University of Hawaii Sea Grant College Program, the Maui Surfrider Foundation and project partners, the event will include a beach cleanup as well as opportunities to learn about dune restoration, coastal resilience efforts and ongoing stewardship activities.
