Schatz introduces bill aimed at addressing surgeon shortage in remote communities

U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz, has introduced legislation aimed at improving access to general surgeons in Hawaii and other underserved areas across the country. According to the senator’s office, the Ensuring Access to General Surgery Act would direct the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to study access to general surgeons among underserved populations and identify areas facing shortages. Maui Huliau Foundation offers free summer programs for educators

Maui Huliau Foundation is offering a series of free professional learning opportunities this summer for Maui educators focused on climate literacy, place-based teaching and community partnerships. The programs are open to public and private K-12 educators. Hawaii Department of Education and charter school teachers in grades 6-12 may also continue their learning through two PDE3 professional development courses offered during the 2026-27 school year.
