Jotoku Asato, 92

Jotoku Asato, 92, of Pukalani, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2016. He was born on December 18, 1923 at Kaheka, Paia to Uto and Jokichi Asato.

Jotoku retired from Maui Land and Pineapple Co., Ltd. as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of the Maui 442nd Veterans Club and a recipient of the U.S. Congressional Gold medal, U.S. highest medal of honor award, and Chevalier de la Legion d’honneur medal, France’s highest decoration. He also served as Sgt. First Class in the 25th infantry of the Korean War. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed working in his garden.

Private services were held on May 13, 2016 at Makawao Veteran’s Cemetery. The family requests no monetary donations (koden).

He is predeceased by his wife, Doris Chizuko Asato. He is survived by his sons, Richard (Ladda) Asato, Sherman Asato; daughter, Karen (Patrick) Saka; grandchildren, Leigh Ringstad, Aaron Ringstad, Robert Asato; great grandchildren, Tyce Ringstad and Kaiya Ringstad.
