Bryant “Charlie Tuna” Rude

Bryant Rude of Paia, universally known as “Charlie Tuna”, died September 17, 2016 at Maui Memorial Medical Center. He was born September 18, 1948 in Santa Ana, California. His parents, Alan Grant Rude and Betty Louis Yates Rude, preceded him in death.

He served in the United States Army, receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1970. Charlie was an adventurous man who travelled extensively in Europe. An experienced sailor, he worked on sailboats that went from the Mainland to Maui and back three times, as well as many islands in the South Pacific.

For more than twenty years, Charlie was employed by Charley’s Restaurant in Paia. He was also the caretaker of the restaurant’s Great Dane Mascots.

Charlie is survived by his sister Janet Rude of Napa, California and his final Great Dane, Sonny Boy.

Spreading of ashes will take place at 4pm at Ho’okipa Beach Park on Wednesday, September 28, 2016. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society on Maui.
