Frances Fortunata “Atang” Arcilla Sevilla, 88
Frances Fortunata “Atang” Arcilla Sevilla, born October 14, 1928, in Pepe’ekeo, Hawai’i passed away on December 21, 2016 at Hale Makua Kahului.
Frances was the daughter of the late Theresa and Pedro Arcilla, who were from respectively, Cebu and Ormok in the Visayas, Philippines. The Arcilla family moved to Hamakuapoko, Maui, when Frances was three years old. She attended Maui High School in “H-poko,” but her education was interrupted by WWII. She later attended Maui Vocational School and earned her GED from the Department of Education, Adult Education School.
Frances married business leader and community organizer, the late Asisclo Baylon “A.B.” Sevilla on May 1, 1948. For decades, the Sevillas lived in Paukukalo and owned and managed the A.B. Sevilla Store, Sevilla World Tour and Travel Agency, Emilio’s Barber Shop, and several real estate properties in Wailuku and Wai’ehu. She was also a custodian at Maui Community College, where, because of her kindness, generosity and activism, she garnered the title, “The Mayor of MCC.” She welcomed and cared for many new, young people to the island, finding them homes and jobs. Known for her expertise in immigration policy, she advised many Mauians with their visa and citizenship issues and facilitated the reunion of families from their country of origin.
Frances danced the hula for Aunty Emma Farden Sharpe, played the piano, cultivated flowers, vegetables and fruits that were sold through the family store.
In addition to her parents and husband, “Atang” is predeceased by her siblings, Carlita Arcilla Bajingting, Narciso Joseph Arcilla, Mamerta Arcilla Souza, George Crispin Arcilla, Marcella Arcilla Franco and three of her children, Mary Sevilla, Albert Sevilla and Rosita Sevilla-Stein. She is survived by her siblings, Leonarda Asuncion (Fred), Frances Silva (Manny), William Razo (Madeline), Conrado Razo (Millie), sister-in-law Roseline Arcilla, and children Linda Kushi, Lolita Eugenio (Gil), Duke Sevilla (Jean), John Mario Sevilla (Jim), Christina Smith (Alapaki), son-in-law Gregory Stein and her many grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Christ The King Church; Eulogy to begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by Mass at 11:00 a.m. with burial to follow at 12:30 p.m. at Maui Memorial Park Cemetery in Wailuku.
