Walter was born in Maui on August 29, 1934 to Matsugoro and Hisa Sakai. He was the youngest of 11 children.
He graduated from Maui High School, served in the Air Force, graduated from the University of Hawaii with a Bachelors in Business Administration, and retired in 1994 as an Employment Service Specialist – Hawaii Dept. of Labor.
He enjoyed his share of traveling, caring for his young grandchildren, collecting State quarters, listening to oldies but goodies, watching old samurai movies and westerns, solving crossword puzzles, but what he really enjoyed most was spending time with friends and family.
Mr. Sakai is survived by his wife, Takako; daughter Jean (Troy) Yokoyama; son Dan (Monica) Takamura; grandchildren Kassandra Yokoyama, Kai Yokoyama, Kitana Takamura; and his loving Sakai ohana.
