Michael Suda, 89

Michael Suda, 89 of Haiku, Maui passed on February 20, 2020 under the care of Hospice Maui.

He was delivered by midwife to Shinnosuke and Tsui Suda on May 30, 1930 in Huelo, Maui.

A retired teacher with 33 years of service at Haiku and Makawao Elementary schools, Mike devoted much of his retirement to community projects deserving of recognition.

He was presented the Tony Tomoso Award (Outstanding Senior Volunteer) in 2004 to recognize his commitment to the students of his alma mater, Haiku Elementary, where he also helped organize its 100th Anniversary Ho’olaule’a. He led the effort to establish the Korean War Memorial at Makawao Veterans Cemetery; and assisted the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii in the site verification of the Haiku jail, where local Japanese were incarcerated by the U.S. government during WWII.

He was sunshine, always happy and smiley, with warmth like the rays of the sun. Mahalo to the caring staff at Hospice Maui and Roselani Place.

Predeceased by his son, Mark; survived by his wife, Miyoko; daughter, Mavis.
