Minoru “Pointer” Takaki, 97
Minoru “Pointer” Takaki, 97, of Kahului, passed away peacefully on March 25, 2020, at Hale Makua Kahului. Minoru was born on November 30, 1922, to Teizo & Mitsuye (Utano) Takaki in Paia, Maui.
He grew up in McGerrow Camp in Puunene, attended Lahainaluna as a boarder, and later graduated from Baldwin High School. Minoru served in the U.S. Army as a linguist for the Military Intelligence Service (MIS) in Japan after World War II. He worked for 40+ years at HC&S as a field surveyor and later as an auto parts clerk. After retiring from HC&S, he worked part-time as a tour driver for U-Me Tours and Polynesian Hospitality.
In his younger days, Minoru was an avid bird hunter and tako diver. He was also a pro at playing the harmonica.
Minoru is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Kikue (Nagato) Takaki; sons, Leighton and Gordon (Janice); daughter, Wendy (Dain) Kane; grandchildren, Davis (Bethany) Kane, Jaimelyn (Jay) Paa, Mika’ele Kane, and Reina Takaki; great-grandchildren, Jace, Jaxsen, Crystal Jade, and Julian David Paa, and Hiwa Kane; brother, Susumu-deceased (Lillian) Takaki; sister, Jeanette Watanabe; numerous nieces and nephews.
Many thanks to the wonderful staff at Hale Makua (especially Tito) and Hospice Maui for keeping him comfortable in his final days.
Private family services will be held at a later date. Nakamura Mortuary will be handling the arrangements.
