Sachiko Higa, 99
Sachiko Higa, 99, of Pukalani, Maui passed away at Kula Hospital, April 16, 2020, where she resided from May 1, 2011. She was born on May 1, 1920, in Paia, Maui, to the late Seichi and Sayo Higa.
After her family moved back to Okinawa, at the age of 5, she lived with hanai parents, the late Yoshi and Hyakusai (Asato) Higa.
Sachiko is predeceased by her husband, Zenjiro Higa and her sister, Yoneko (Kinsho) Higa.
After graduating 8th grade from Keahua School, she completed a ladies finishing school in Wailuku and worked as a maid in several homes in Wailuku and Sunnyside.
After she married, she worked summers as a packer at Maui Land and Pineapple cannery. She later worked for many years as a cook and waitress at the Porttown Delicatessen in the old Kahului Shopping Center.
She enjoyed her orchids and plants, working in the yard, crocheting, sewing, playing solitaire and word search.
She was a great cook and baker and made fantastic American and Okinawan dishes. She played the harmonica, koto, and was a member of the Maui Paranku (drum) dance group.
She was an active member of the Paia Rinzai Zen Mission and was in the goekai (ringing bells and singing) group.
She is survived by her 5 children – Janet (Lawrence dec’d) Miyahira; Juliana “Julie” Higa; Edwin “Eddie” (Sandie), Alvin, Steven (Lorraine) Higa; 6 grandchildren – Jason (Tasha Kekona) Miyahira, Lynne (Eric) Paet, Shavis (Maybelline) Higa, Cheney (Abcde) Higa, Shanell (Brad) Miyamoto, Chelsie (Chris Miller) Higa; 9 Great-Grandchildren; 1 Great Great Granddaughter; She is also survived by 6 siblings in Okinawa, brothers – Shinichi (Motoko) and Hideo Higa, sisters-Kiyo Kinjo, Sumi (Muneyoshi) Yoshi-kawa, Mitsue Takeshita, Kimie (Minoru) Yamauchi.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic memorial service will be held at Paia Rinzai Zen Mission at a future date.
Nakamura Mortuary will be assisting the family with all arrangements.
